New details about Heath Ledger's tragic death revealed by Hollywood director

A Hollywood director has shared fresh insights into the tragic passing of Heath Ledger, marking the first time such details have been revealed. Ledger, the Australian actor, died in January 2008 from an accidental drug overdose in his New York apartment, at the young age of 28. Sixteen years later, director Stephen Gaghan, known for films like "Doolittle" starring Robert Downey Jr. and "Gold" with Matthew McConaughey, opened up about the distressing phone call he received from Ledger's father, Kim, shortly after the actor's demise.

Gaghan recently appeared on Malcolm Gladwell's podcast, "Revisionist History: Development Hell," which delves into projects that never made it to the screen. During the podcast, Gaghan recounted how Kim discovered a copy of the film's script next to Heath's body and, upon seeing Gaghan's phone number on it, reached out to him after arriving at his son's apartment.

Reflecting on the heartbreaking conversation, Gaghan shared, "The dad and the guy who was closest to him in his professional life, they were there with the body and our script was in bed with him, and [Gladwell's] book was on the bedside table. I think my number was on the script, like written. These guys, as you can imagine, they are in shock and they dialed that number and I don't know why. I remember her face and I was just like, I was speechless. I just listened and listened and listened. It was just really, really sad. And it's still sad. For me, I just had to put a pin in it."

The director had envisioned creating "a bunch of movies" with Ledger, but sadly, those plans never materialized. He concluded, "I met Heath Ledger and I'd gotten to be very, very close with him instantly. I had a real connection with him that was unusual and really special to me. I had this feeling that I love this guy and was going to make a bunch of movies with him - and then I got [the] phone call."
